\nVictims of a corrupted system or accomplices?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

The Bitkovs family story could be the basis for a film of an international espionage intrigue.<\/h3>\n

Their struggle to survive the pursuit of a political\u00a0system and their desire to have a normal life,<\/h3>\n

have exposed them to\u00a0dangerous and complicated situations.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Russian businessmen, Igor and Irina Bitkova, owned a pulp and paper mill in Russia. According to their statements and according to international support, they were victims of a \u201ccorporate raid\u201d and then not to give in to political pressure, were forced to leave Russia and moved to Guatemala in 2009, with their daughter Anastasia. The Bitkov\u2019s received their DPI and Guatemalan passports from Guatemalan authorities hands and they established themselves in Guatemala City, where Vladimir, their youngest son was born, being still under age. However, fate had prepared a very bitter pill to swallow, their new life, their new identities and all their projects would fall down when it was discovered that the documents they had submitted, and legally extended by Guatemalan authorities and in their desperation to have a new life, they were swindled and fell into the hands of Guatemalan government mafias like Direction of Immigration, the RENAP and unscrupulous law firm \u201cCutino International offshore\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

You begin to see the light<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After a year of being imprisoned on charges of Usurpation of civil status and Use of\u00a0false documents, on January 15, Judge on Major Risk B court, Miguel Angel\u00a0Galvez gave Irina Bitkova and daughter Anastasia, freedom under the benefit of\u00a0alternative measures. However, Igor Bitkov still remains deprived of freedom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A mafia with international tentacles<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to counsel’s comments Lic. Jos\u00e9 Rolando Alvarado, the Bitkovs were\u00a0victims of an international network that had been operating in Guatemala for a very\u00a0long time, and although the Bitkov\u2019s are curiously the only foreigners who have\u00a0suffered persecution and imprisonment, there are currently more than 40 ex\u00a0employees of RENAP and Migration Office held prisoners, accused of being part of\u00a0this criminal organization.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A ghost law firm<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Although the law firm Cutino International offshore has been noted as the\u00a0intellectual hub of this network that provided false documents, there is a great\u00a0secrecy, both by the Prosecutor\u2019s Office and the CICIG, in their network\u00a0relationship with the Migration Office and RENAP and a possible future arrest.<\/p>\n

The accusing Bank does not present evidence<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Russian government accuses the Bitkov family of defrauding several banks to\u00a0which the defense attorney Lic. Jose Rolando Alvarado, replied that the charges\u00a0brought by the Russian bank VTB, has no legal or factual basis, because there is\u00a0no element or evidence of alleged fraud, it stresses that this charge was not\u00a0included in the indictment of the Public Prosecutor, reflecting their lack of legal\u00a0weight. On the subject, Irina Bitkova said at a Public Hearing: \u201ceverything is a\u00a0political scam and has no foundation\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A shameful theft comes out<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Being placed under arrest, the Bitkov\u2019s family house, located in Casa & Campo\u00a0condominium, at kilometer 23.5, on highway to El Salvador in Fraijanes, was under\u00a0the Civil National Police\u2019s guard, which had custody of the goods the Bitkovs had\u00a0left, however, the property was systematically looted, causing very large economic\u00a0losses. Bitkov\u2019s lawyers have initiated criminal proceeding against the\u00a0Prosecutor\u2019s Office and PNC and claim to the Police\u2019s Professional Responsibility\u00a0office to clarify this theft. C4 determined that during the time the house was\u00a0guarded, surveillance was conducted by approximately 60 different agents.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Victims or accomplices of a Corruption system?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Bitkov\u2019s case uncovers many questions regarding the mafias entrenched in \u00a0government agencies of Guatemala. How many foreigners have been scammed?\u00a0How many have traveled with documents? Does this kind of practice continue?\u00a0And with respect to the status of \u201cpolitical persecution\u201d according to the\u00a0international press, the evidence presented by the Bitkov on its website, the lack of\u00a0action by the Russian bank, the support of a US senator and the billionaire Bill\u00a0Browder, it poses a very different picture than when it was originally introduced,\u00a0when this case came to light. The Guatemalan justice has a hot potato in its\u00a0hands, burning the insides of national corruption but also reaches the international\u00a0mafias and even the Russian government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What is the Corporate Raid?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It is a sophisticated form of organized crime, used to take control\u00a0of other people\u2019s companies. The practice flourishes in countries\u00a0where there is a weak rule of law and high levels of corruption. In\u00a0our case the corporate raid is part of a political persecution, both\u00a0Bill Browder like us, are victims of Russian corruption and the\u00a0government of Vladimir Putin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\"2\"Senator Roger Wicker USA<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

US Senator Roger Wicker, in a letter to the president of Guatemala, the Secretary\u00a0of State Jon Kerry, the Guatemalan Foreign Minister Ra\u00fal Morales and Attorney\u00a0General Thelma Aldana said that in 2009 the Bitkov family was forced to leave\u00a0Russia for refusing to pay bribes and to get to Guatemala were victims of corrupt\u00a0lawyers and officials who under false pretenses were given false documents.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Furthermore and punctually mentions, that: “the US Congress has held numerous\u00a0hearings and passed laws that make the regime of President Putin, reproving their\u00a0violations to Basic Human Rights in Russia, and as such, we urge the Government\u00a0of Guatemala to resolve the Bitkov\u2019s family legal case as soon as possible and\u00a0consider granting this request for political asylum”.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

American businessman Bill Browder, was also a victim of what is\u00a0known in Russia as Corporate Raids: (confiscation of businesses and\u00a0other assets, with the help of corrupt police and judges). Their struggle\u00a0against the Russian system has reached the highest level, and in\u00a0solidarity with the case of the Bitkovs, sent a letter to then-President\u00a0Alejandro Maldonado, who in one paragraph states: “The bad\u00a0treatment this family is suffering, it raises serious questions about\u00a0Guatemala fulfilling its Human Rights commitments, including the\u00a0Convention on the Child\u2019s Rights. It also raises questions about how\u00a0Guatemala is being manipulated by corrupt Russian officials<\/strong> <\/em>“.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
